Chapter 6
THE CUSTOMER DATA FILE filename: LCTNCODE.DAT
The CUSTOMER DATA file contains the descriptions of your local
customers, their track capacity, station name and a most
important 3 character code for each. If the era of your
railroad permits Freight Agents and team tracks, we highly
recommend them at every station possible as they provide us
with a much greater variety of car needs, lading and customers.
The Freight Agent can exchange LCL (less than car load)
shipments with all other stations both on line and via
interchange with other railroads. The team track serves the
customer who has to move his goods between his business and the
railroad with a wagon or truck. He may not even have real
estate on your limited layout space. The team track and
freighthouse track(s) do not have to be isolated, but it/they
can be part of the track leading into or beyond another
customer.
CUSTOMER DATA FILE, DATA FIELDS
The first data field RECORD NUMBER must be sequential starting
at 01 and counting as high as 40. Blank lines or comment
lines are permitted as long as they do not begin with numbers.
Out of sequence numbering will abort the program when it loads.
The second data field CUSTOMER CODE is a three character code
or acronym. If you fly, you have seen the 3 character location
codes used by airlines (PIH=Pocatello ID). We do the same for
the same reason- to minimize paper work. We choose to let the
first letter indicate the station name and if possible the next
two characters are chosen to remind us of the customers name.
The interchange train(s) send and receive shipments from other
railroads, hence those railroads are also our customers and
need a three character code too. This code must be the same as
the first three characters in the TRAIN code in the
TRNNAMES.DAT file.
The RIP track is another place that a car can be while it is
tied up for repairs, so we assign that location the code "RIP".
Enter three characters starting in column 05
The third data field is the STATION. This field is completely
optional for your convenience and may be left blank. It is used
only in the CUSTOMER STATUS REPORT. Enter up to 7 characters
starting in column 09.
6-2
The fouth data field is the CUSTOMER NAME. This field is also
optional, but valuable, in relating the 3 character codes to
customers names. It is used only in the CUSTOMER STATUS
REPORT. Many off-line customers are not in this file, so the
WHEELERS must get names from the WAYBILL.DAT file. Up to 22
characters starting in column 17.
The fifth data field is our customers TRACK CAPACITY. You will
have to decide this based upon the length of cars your customer
uses. The program insures that the customer will have room,
after any pickups are made, for the new cars to be set out.
Enter a number 1 through 99 starting in column 40. Use 99 for
the RIP track
The sixth data field is the three or four character TRAIN CODE.
This code must match one of the codes in the TRNNAMES.DAT file
or the program will abort during loading. The faulty line will
be shown. Enter 3 or 4 characters starting in column 43.
